Criteria for choosing telecommunication software

When choosing telecommunications software, one should use the following criteria:

  • Functionality in relation to adaptability to the company’s needs, possibility of extending the entire software and professional technical support.
  • Software costs, including the cost of the system as well as its implementation and exploitation. However, one must bear in mind that the most expensive system is not always the best; this criterion can be summarized in: high quality at a sensible price.
  • Date and duration of implementation; effective implementation of large telecommunications systems will certainly take a considerable amount of time; for this reason it is important to be familiar with the dates and deadlines suggested by the software provider.

Technology utilized within telecommunication software

Production and implementation of advanced IT systems by leading IT companies are based on well-defined and constantly improved methods. The highest quality is ensured by professional employees, specialists, technologies and tools. These factors should be taken into account by a telecommunications company when choosing a software provider.

Telecommunications software usually consists of several Web applications, i.e. built within the WWW browser environment, or independent applications, i.e. built within the environment of various operational systems. Importantly, the latter must be designed for both the popular Microsoft Windows and Unix systems. They must also be optimized for processors in various technologies, e.g. RISC and Intel. Although advanced software for telecommunication operators is usually fully optimized, one should pay attention to this aspect when selecting a system.

Telecommunications systems are installed as applications run by means of operational systems. They are installed on several or more machines connected to one another by a LAN or WAN network. The result is higher software efficiency, since all system components are fully configurable. It is also possible to monitor their operation by means of special applications which can be a part of the system.

One of the key aspects of telecommunications software is its integration and effectiveness as well as errorless cooperation with other systems. These systems should therefore be able to operate in all basic language formats, e.g. XML, and the input and also output data format, along with their interpretation, should be specified by the users.

Network Inventory

Network Inventory Systems constitute telecommunications software for management and inventorization of telecommunications network resources as well as network configuration, planning and extension. A Network Inventory consists of many modules responsible for essential processes and operator activities related to network exploitation and configuration.

Network Inventory telecommunications software collects information about all network resources and services provided by the network, which enables thorough analysis of its functionality. Updated information about the network forms the basis for the operation of OSS systems. This information will be a solid foundation for other systems such as Service Inventory or network modules for monitoring and service activation. Network Inventory Systems scan the network in accordance with the set criteria. The collected database may be updated and supplemented with new information. It may also be exported to various formats.

There are also advanced extending modules, standard software for Network Inventory operators and general “Inventory” systems. For instance, Comarch offers Process-Driven Inventory systems which constitute the extended form of traditional Inventory systems. The extension consists of automation and enhanced control of operations by means of a special process engine. This module creates Inventory telecommunications software not only a database, but also an integrated solution which provides complete information about the state of the network and the services, including the general state, history and simulations of future transformations.

Advanced Network Inventory Systems allow for clear graphic modeling of wiring (e.g. wiring premises). It facilitates a practical understanding of the network structure, reporting and problem solving. Modeling is also feasible on a larger scale than building interiors.

Billing Systems

A telecom billing system is a technologically advanced piece of telecommunications software which supports the operator’s billing processes. These include calculating charges for the operator’s services and providing customers with printed invoices. Furthermore, advanced billing software analyzes customer needs and enables planning special offers and new services which aim at winning new customers. These functions make the telecom billing system a source for acquiring a competitive advantage on the market of telecommunications. Although the implementation is very expensive, it is at the same time inevitable. Only one question remains: which system should I choose?

Present-day billing solutions are scalable and highly efficient solutions which can process virtually infinite amounts of information. Telecommunications software enables taking orders, receiving complaints, recording the clearing processes, dealing with overdue payments, processing electronic payments and many others.

A clear interface is one of the biggest assets of an IT system. Billing applications are also customer-oriented: their interface is user-friendly and it ensures easy and intuitive navigation. This makes introducing any changes to the offer (promotions, discounts etc.) a simple task which does not require any specialist knowledge regarding the operation of the system.

Advanced convergent billing software has fully configurable formats adapted to such services as IP, GPRS, UMTS and VoIP, and they are also equipped with a wide range of price plans and discount plans. In a word, they are extremely flexible.

The business and operational benefits of using billing systems are obvious. Telecommunications software enables offering various price plans and discount plans, cost control in real time, online payments and cost analysis. The system supports business processes as well as pre-paid and post-paid convergence processes. The general result is increased customer satisfaction and amplified retention indicators.

Convergent Billing Systems are often released as integrated billing software and CRM systems. It is an excellent solution since it allows for quick increases in income due to accelerated introduction of new services and products onto the market, improved loyalty and heightened customer satisfaction. This is the outcome of system integration. The CRM module, as an important component of the billing software, enables operators to coordinate the activities of winning and maintaining customers with the clearing processes. This allows for accessing the integrated data in any branch of the operator. As a result, the operational costs are lower since the integration of other systems is no longer necessary.

VPN and its purpose

VPN is an abbreviation for Virtual Private Network, commonly referred to as VPN network. It allows for secure connection between networks and computers by means of dangerous and untrusted media which include the Internet, radio connections and leased lines. Although the connections are not secured, the transmission between the networks and computers uses secured and encrypted virtual channels.

Remote access is not at all extraordinary or “de luxe” for many users. It is much more of a necessity which grants access to files and other resources of the local network (e.g. the company network) when one is at home or on the road. Miles of new cables that would be needed to access the company network are thus replaced with the virtual network, i.e. the existing infrastructure of public network. Such a network becomes private for its definite users by using encryption protocols and other types of security measures which make the private network inaccessible for other users of the public network. To put it more precisely, data is transmitted as TCP/IP protocol data packets within the data packets of the secure IPSec protocol. For this reason, VPN networks are called tunnel connections since IPSec protocol creates a secure tunnel for transmitting TCP/IP data packets. Appropriate telecommunications software is necessary for encrypting and transmitting these types of data packets. There are other protocols that allow for creating tunnel connections. The most popular ones include PPTP, L2TP, IPSec and SSL.

Communication operators often use such networks. They can also be supported by special telecommunications software. For instance, Telekomunikacja Polska (Polish national telecommunications provider) activated a service for companies with several or up to twenty branches. The new service is based on telecommunications software for VPN networks and allows for free connections between all the company branches spread over large areas. When customers purchase this service, they also receive a server with the software for managing IP telephony and a set of IP telephones. The service also includes repairs and administration of the provided devices.
